Cancer is undoubtedly one of the world's most immense health problems, claiming the lives of around 100 million people annually and accounting for one in six deaths worldwide. This year, it is estimated that cancer will take a toll on 611,720 lives in the United States. Additionally, roughly 2.0 million people will be diagnosed with cancer by December.
Different cancer types have different survival rates, and more than 80% of people diagnosed with cancer have types that are easier to diagnose and/or have at least a ten-year survival rate. However, there are incurable cancer types, and patients often have a life expectancy of less than one year.
Meet Shefali, a 15-year-old girl who was recently diagnosed with kidney cancer after experiencing constant headaches that affected her sleep starting from the beginning of this year. Once diagnosed, she spent two weeks stuck in the hospital, and her life was quickly overwhelmed with various medicines and treatments, such as radiation.
Here is a video interview diving deeper into how Shefali was affected by her diagnoses.
